Evaluation - mise en scene (Castle)

The mise en scene was vital for our first day of filming, as the castle was a difficult location to reach.

As a method of creating the effect of having a sliced neck, I suggested we tried covering the back edge of a knife with fake blood and proceeded 'slice' Tia's neck with the blunt edge so as to get a more life like 'cut' that would be expected from a knife as opposed to having an uneven-looking slice on her neck which worked very well.

Not only did we have to focus on the minor details of the workbench being messy and dirty, we also had to turn our attention to the bigger picture of the entire set. We decided that the best way to get the idea of the killer living where he kills people would come across with the inclusion of a bloody, dirty mattress and empty bottles to make the place look lived in.

To make everything seem like it belonged in a killers den, we ended up covering most of the tools in either mud and blood which made them all seem used and grimy, suggesting that the killer isn't new to using household tools to cause pain to someone. I particularly like the way in which the fake blood has dried on the handle of the scissors to make the blood look old and dried which works really well.
